Residency Location

The first Sangam House Residency is located at the Adishakti Property in Pondicherry.

The Adishakti grounds are located in the countryside, eight kilometers from the heart of Pondicherry and three kilometers from the international city of Auroville. The property serves primarily as the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research, a charitable, non-profit trust. This unique performing arts laboratory includes performing arts practice in the arenas of theatre, music, dance, and shadow puppetry. Adishakti houses one of the finest performances spaces in the country. Apart from being used for rehearsal and performance by the Adishakti repertory, the Koothu-Kovil hosts local and international performances all year round.

Adishakti's holistic view of the arts and life finds expression in its property, which is a cultural hub in the lap of nature. The landscape is dotted with fruit trees and vegetable plantations – all organically grown - and traditional trees, historically a part of the region’s environment and now carefully replanted. There are three sacred groves, nurtured in the traditional way, and containing many trees mentioned in ancient Indian texts. Medicinal herb gardens have been planted after consultations with local medicinal practitioners and from alternative streams of treatment like Siddha medicine and Ayurveda.

The three acre grounds have two bore wells, which provide it with natural drinking water. Solar panels pump water into storage tanks and for irrigating orchards and gardens. Additionally, Adishakti recycles its toilet, kitchen and bath water for irrigation. Biodegradable waste on the property is turned into compost. Non-biodegradable waste, such as plastics, bottles, etc., are appropriately recycled in Pondicherry.

Structures on the Adishakti property have been built using vernacular architecture styles. They are low impact and made of local and traditional materials, making them appropriate for Pondicherry’s weather and climate conditions.
